The 70s and 80s were a dangerous time in the oil business. Hostage crises, embargoes, political upheaval. It was fast-paced world of excess, high stakes, and deal-making with dictators, warlords, and enemies of the United States with the promise of extreme wealth. Marc Rich, dubbed “El Matador” by his colleagues, not only dominated the game, but played by different rules – he created the “spot market” for oil, essentially conceiving the modern oil market. Escaping Nazi-occupied Belgium as a child, Rich saw wealth as freedom. But in Spring 1983 his world came crashing down when Rudy Giuliani took an aggressive stance against white-collar crime, announcing “the biggest tax fraud indictment in history”. Rich was accused of racketeering, conspiracy, and trading with the enemy. He retreated to Switzerland, hired a security team led by a former Mossad officer, and spent the next 17 years running from US Marshall Ken Hill, whose sole mission was to bring Rich back to the US for trial. In 2001 on Clinton’s last day in office, he pardoned Rich, a controversial decision to say the least. Until Rich’s death last year, he maintained his innocence and never once step foot back in the United States.
